Claude's Recommendations
- DRIVE: JCM Amp (JC) at gain 32 — slightly more than the Back in Black patch; Jailbreak (1976) used cranked early-70s Marshall 1959 Super Lead heads with NO Schaffer-Vega boost, so the amp itself was being pushed harder into natural power-tube saturation to compensate; this gives the slightly rawer, more open crunch characteristic of the Bon Scott era.
- COMP/WAH: Compressor at depth 3 (lighter than Back in Black) — the 1976 tone has NO Schaffer-Vega companding circuit; this light compression just adds a touch of dynamic control and harmonic density without squashing the natural dynamics of the cranked Plexi, keeping the feel raw and uncompressed.
- EQ: Low 6 (+3dB), Mid 6 (+3dB), High 5 (0dB/neutral) — this is the crucial tonal difference from You Shook Me; the Dirty Deeds era tone is warmer, fatter and bluesier with more low-mid weight and no Schaffer-Vega high-end boost; pulling the highs back to neutral gives the older, thicker Bon Scott-era character.
- NR/CAB: 4x12 Stack (S) with NR at 2 — minimal noise reduction, same Marshall 4x12 cab; Angus's cranked Super Lead produces very musical natural amp noise and buzz that's part of the 1976 character — gate it as little as possible.
- EXPRESSION PEDAL → Drive Gain: Back off to ~20 for the driving open-chord rhythm groove, push to full 32 for the slashing bluesy solo — Jailbreak has a very dynamic arc between a relatively open verse groove and an aggressive lead section that really opens up the amp.
